Before You Visit

What ID to Bring

You'll need a valid, non-expired government-issued photo ID that shows you're 21 or older. Your ID will be checked at the door — no exceptions.

  • State driver's license (any U.S. state)
  • State ID card (any U.S. state)
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • Foreign passport
  • U.S. military ID
  • Tribal ID
Tips
  • Make sure your ID is NOT expired — expired IDs are rejected
  • Out-of-state IDs are fully accepted with the same purchase limits as Colorado residents
  • If your ID is damaged or hard to read, bring a backup
  • Some dispensaries scan IDs — this is standard practice and required by state law
  • No one under 21 is allowed in the retail area, period

Cash vs Card: The Reality

Due to federal banking restrictions, Colorado dispensaries operate primarily on cash, though many now offer debit options.

Cash
ALWAYS ACCEPTED
The safest bet. Bring more than you think — taxes add ~20-25%.
Debit Card
MANY LOCATIONS
Processed as ATM withdrawal. Rounds to nearest $5. Usually $3-5 fee.
Credit Card
NOT ACCEPTED
Federal regulations prohibit credit card processing for cannabis. Don't count on it.
Payment Apps (CanPay, etc.)
SOME LOCATIONS
Growing in popularity. Check dispensary website beforehand.

💡 BUDGET TIP: Colorado has some of the lowest cannabis prices in the country (averaging around $90/oz wholesale), but taxes still add up. A $30 eighth might cost $36-38 after tax.

Browse the Menu First

Colorado dispensaries offer enormous variety. Spending 10 minutes browsing beforehand helps you know what to ask for.

What to Expect Inside

When You Arrive

Colorado dispensaries range from rustic mountain shops to sleek urban boutiques. Many are located in strip malls, industrial areas, or standalone buildings. All licensed dispensaries will have their license prominently displayed.

The Check-In Process

Every dispensary will verify your ID before allowing you onto the sales floor.

  1. Enter the lobby or reception area
  2. Present your ID to the receptionist or security
  3. ID is scanned or manually checked
  4. If busy, you may wait briefly in the lobby
  5. You're buzzed or escorted into the sales floor

💡 FIRST TIME? Just tell them! Colorado budtenders have been helping cannabis newcomers for over a decade. They'll take extra time to explain things.

About Security

Security presence varies. Some dispensaries have visible security guards; others just have a friendly person at a check-in desk. Urban and high-volume locations tend to have more security. This is all normal — cannabis is a cash-heavy business.

The Sales Floor Experience

Colorado's mature market means dispensaries have had years to perfect their layouts. You'll typically encounter:

Working with Your Budtender

Colorado budtenders are generally knowledgeable — they've had over a decade to develop expertise. Many are genuinely passionate about cannabis.

Product Types Explained

Colorado dispensaries offer every product category imaginable. Here's what first-timers need to know:

Flower

⭐⭐⭐ Moderate

Traditional cannabis buds. The plant itself, dried and cured.

Onset
Within minutes
Duration
1-3 hours

First-Timer Tip: Colorado flower is some of the best in the country. But for your first time, consider a pre-roll so you don't need to buy accessories.

Pre-Rolls

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good for beginners

Pre-made joints, ready to smoke.

Onset
Within minutes
Duration
1-3 hours

First-Timer Tip: Pre-rolls are incredibly cheap in Colorado. A 0.5g joint is plenty for a first-timer. Take a puff or two, wait 15 minutes.

Vape Cartridges

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent for beginners

Pre-filled cartridges of cannabis oil that attach to a battery.

Onset
Within minutes
Duration
1-3 hours

First-Timer Tip: Ask for a disposable all-in-one vape or a starter kit with battery. Take ONE small puff and wait 15 minutes.

Edibles

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good BUT requires caution

Cannabis-infused gummies, chocolates, mints, beverages, etc.

Onset
30 minutes to 2 HOURS (be patient!)
Duration
4-8 hours (longer and stronger than smoking)

First-Timer Tip: START WITH 5mg or less. Colorado limits individual servings to 10mg max. Cut that in half for your first time. Wait 2 FULL HOURS before taking more. Altitude makes edibles hit harder.

Tinctures

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good for beginners

Liquid cannabis extract in a dropper bottle.

Onset
15-45 minutes
Duration
4-6 hours

First-Timer Tip: Great for people who want control. Start with the lowest marked dose.

Topicals

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Easiest option

Cannabis-infused lotions, balms, patches applied to skin.

Onset
15-30 minutes for localized effect
Duration
2-4 hours

First-Timer Tip: Perfect for sore muscles after skiing, hiking, or biking. Popular with athletes.

Concentrates

⭐ NOT recommended for first-timers

Highly concentrated cannabis extracts (wax, shatter, live resin, rosin)

Onset
Immediate
Duration
1-3 hours

First-Timer Tip: Skip these for now. Come back when you have more experience.

Colorado Taxes and Prices

Good news: Colorado has some of the lowest cannabis prices in the country. The market is mature, competition is fierce, and you benefit.

Common First-Timer Questions

Can I go to multiple dispensaries in one day?

Yes. Colorado doesn't have a statewide tracking system for recreational purchases. However, your possession limit is 2 ounces total — stay under that.

Will my visit be reported to anyone?

No. Recreational purchases aren't reported to anyone. However, debit/ATM transactions will show on your bank statement. Use cash if you want maximum privacy.

Can I consume in my hotel room?

Check with the hotel — many prohibit it. Some "cannabis-friendly" hotels and rental properties do allow it. Ask before booking or use a consumption lounge.

What if I buy something and don't like it?

No returns or exchanges on cannabis products — state law. Another reason to start small.

Is it obvious I'm a first-timer?

Maybe, and that's fine! Colorado budtenders help tourists every single day. It's a huge part of their job, especially in Denver and mountain towns.

Why is recreational banned in Colorado Springs?

Local option. Some cities and counties in Colorado have opted out of recreational sales. Colorado Springs, home to several military bases, chose not to allow recreational dispensaries. Medical dispensaries still operate there.

Can I smoke on the ski slopes?

No. All ski resorts prohibit cannabis use on the mountain, regardless of whether they're on private or public land. You can lose your lift ticket.

Should I get a medical card?

Only if you're a Colorado resident with a qualifying condition. Visitors can't get Colorado medical cards, and out-of-state cards aren't accepted.

Does altitude really affect my high?

Yes, significantly. Less oxygen + dehydration + cannabis = stronger effects. Every budtender will tell you to start low. Listen to them.

I'm nervous. Is that normal?

Completely normal. But Colorado has been doing this longer than anywhere else in the country. The system works, the staff are experienced, and you'll be fine.

Final Thoughts

Colorado started it all. When voters approved Amendment 64 in 2012, they launched a global experiment that proved legal cannabis could work. Over a decade later, Colorado's market is mature, prices are low, quality is high, and the welcome mat is out for first-timers. Your first dispensary visit in Colorado should be easy — easier than it is in any other state. The staff have seen everything, helped everyone, and genuinely want you to have a good experience. Just remember: altitude is real. Start low, go slow, and drink water. Welcome to the Mile High City — we mean that literally and figuratively. Enjoy Colorado cannabis.
