Vermont • FIRST-TIMER GUIDE
More than 70 licensed retailers in a state of under 700,000 people, and a 2 ounce limit since July 2026.
Vermont has an unusually dense retail market for its size, mostly small independent stores rather than chains. Two rules shape a first visit: adult-use delivery does not exist here, so you are making the trip, and the state prohibits intoxicating hemp products, so what is on a dispensary shelf is the whole legal market.
ID is checked at the door. Registered patients present their card at the same time, since the limits and tax differ.
Cash is the safe assumption, with debit accepted at most Vermont stores.
💡 Vermont prices sit above Massachusetts because the market is small and local. Ski-town stores in particular are not where you find a bargain.
There is no adult-use delivery in Vermont, so the drive is part of the plan, and winter weather is a real factor.
Mostly small, independently owned shops rather than polished chains. The atmosphere is closer to a good local bottle shop than a corporate retailer.
ID at the door, then straight to the counter in most stores.
💡 Say it is your first time. Vermont budtenders tend to know the growers personally and will happily steer a new customer toward something gentle.
Cameras and a controlled entrance. Low-key and quick in most stores.
Product behind glass, with a strong emphasis on Vermont-grown flower. Craft cultivation is a genuine point of pride in this market.
Ask who grew it and ask for something in the lower THC range. Both questions get better answers here than a request for a specific national brand.
The standard adult-use range is available, and everything counts against the 2 ounce limit that took effect on July 1, 2026.
Dried buds sold by weight, much of it grown by small Vermont cultivators.
First-Timer Tip: A gram rather than an eighth, and ask for something mid-range on THC.
Ready-rolled joints, half a gram to a gram.
First-Timer Tip: Two puffs, put it out, wait fifteen minutes.
Gummies and chocolates dosed in milligrams of THC.
First-Timer Tip: One 5 mg piece and nothing else for two hours.
Concentrated oil in a cartridge used with a battery.
First-Timer Tip: One short pull is a full dose for a new consumer.
Liquid drops taken under the tongue with a marked dropper.
First-Timer Tip: Half a dropper, then wait an hour.
Vermont charges a cannabis excise tax plus state sales tax on adult-use purchases, so budget meaningfully above the shelf price. Prices run higher than Massachusetts because the market is small and the cultivation base is craft-scale rather than industrial, which is also why the flower is good.
Uncomfortable, temporary and not dangerous. It peaks and then fades.
How much can I buy?
Two ounces, following the increase that took effect on July 1, 2026 under S.278, with equivalents for other product forms.
Can I get delivery?
Only as a registered medical patient. Vermont does not permit adult-use delivery, which is the main practical reason residents keep a card.
Can visitors buy?
Yes. Any adult 21 or older with valid government photo ID can buy at adult-use limits, regardless of residency.
Can I buy THC drinks at a bar here?
No. Vermont prohibits intoxicating and synthetic hemp cannabinoids, so the hemp beverage scene common in other states does not exist here.
Can I grow my own?
Yes. Vermont permits home cultivation for adults, with a larger allowance for registered patients. Confirm the current plant counts before planting.
Where can I legally consume?
On private property where the owner permits it. Public consumption is prohibited, ski areas enforce their own rules, and Vermont licenses no consumption venues.
Can I take it into New Hampshire or New York?
No. New Hampshire has no adult-use market, and crossing any state line with cannabis is a federal issue regardless.
Vermont is a small, craft-scale market with genuinely good flower and no delivery unless you are a patient. Make the trip on a weekday, ask who grew it, buy one gram, and use it where you are staying with the owner permission. That is the whole legal picture here.
