How to Get Your Florida Medical Marijuana Card
Florida has one of the largest medical cannabis programs in the country with over 800,000 active patients. Here's how to join them.
Florida is medical-only — no recreational sales. But the program is well-established and getting a card is straightforward. Most people complete the process in 1-2 weeks.
Quick Facts
Qualifying Conditions
Florida has a specific list of qualifying conditions, plus a catch-all for similar conditions.
- Cancer
- Epilepsy
- Glaucoma
- HIV/AIDS
- PTSD
- ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease)
- Crohn's Disease
- Parkinson's Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Chronic Nonmalignant Pain
- Any condition comparable to those listed
- Terminal conditions (diagnosed with less than 1 year to live)
The "chronic nonmalignant pain" and "comparable conditions" clauses are interpreted broadly. Conditions like anxiety, insomnia, migraines, arthritis, and back pain often qualify under these categories. Most people who apply get approved.
Finding a Doctor
Florida requires you to see a physician who has completed the state's 8-hour medical marijuana certification course. Not all doctors are qualified.
Qualified Telehealth Services
$150 - $200Services like Leafwell, Veriheal, and DocMJ connect you with Florida-certified doctors via video call. Most appointments are 15-20 minutes and you can usually get seen same-week.
Cannabis Clinics
$200 - $300Dedicated medical marijuana clinics exist throughout Florida (especially in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville). These doctors specialize in cannabis evaluations.
Search the State Registry
VariesFlorida maintains a public database of qualified physicians at knowthefactsmmj.com. You can search by location to find certified doctors near you.
Tip: Telehealth is popular in Florida, but some patients prefer the in-person clinics. Either way, make sure your doctor is on the state's qualified physician list.
Application Process
Florida uses a state registry system. Your doctor enters you into the system, then you complete your application online.
-
See a Qualified Physician
Book an appointment with a Florida-certified cannabis doctor. They'll evaluate your condition and medical history. Bring any relevant medical records.
-
Doctor Enters You in the Registry
If approved, your doctor enters your information into the Florida Medical Marijuana Use Registry. They'll also determine your route of administration (smokable, edibles, topicals, etc.) and dosage.
-
Register as a Patient
Within 5 business days, you'll receive an email with instructions to complete your patient registration. Create your account on the state registry website.
-
Pay the State Fee
Submit your $75 application fee online. This is a flat fee regardless of card duration.
-
Receive Your Card
Once approved, you can immediately access your temporary digital card. Physical cards mail within 10-14 days. You can shop with the digital card right away.

- Access to flower, edibles, concentrates, topicals, and more
- Use the state registry website to check your remaining allotment
- Delivery available from most dispensaries
- Legal protection for possession and use
Renewal Information
Your Florida medical card expires after 1 year. You'll need to see your doctor for recertification and pay the $75 state fee again. Most doctors charge less for renewals than initial visits.
Timeline: Start renewal 45 days before expiration. The state sends email reminders. If your card expires, you cannot purchase until renewed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does approval take?
Most patients receive approval within 5-10 business days after the doctor submits their recommendation. You can access a temporary digital card immediately upon approval.
Can I use my Florida card in other states?
Florida doesn't have reciprocity, but some states accept out-of-state cards. Check the rules for your destination. Popular visitor states like Nevada and Maine often accept FL cards.
What's the 70-day allotment?
Florida limits how much you can purchase in a rolling 70-day period. Your doctor sets your limits for each product type (flower, concentrates, etc.). Track your remaining allotment in your registry account.
Can I smoke flower in Florida?
Yes. Florida legalized smokable flower for medical patients in 2019. Your doctor must specifically authorize this route of administration.
What if I have anxiety but it's not on the list?
Anxiety often qualifies under "chronic nonmalignant pain" or "comparable conditions" if it significantly affects your quality of life. Most cannabis doctors are experienced at identifying qualifying conditions.
Is recreational coming to Florida?
It's been on the ballot multiple times but hasn't passed yet. For now, Florida remains medical-only. A medical card is the only legal way to purchase cannabis in Florida.
