How to Get Medical Cannabis in Texas
Texas has a limited medical cannabis program called the Compassionate Use Program (CUP). It's more restrictive than most states, but access is expanding.
Important: Texas does not issue physical "medical cards." Instead, registered doctors prescribe low-THC cannabis to qualifying patients through a state registry. Here's how the system works.
Quick Facts
Qualifying Conditions
Texas expanded qualifying conditions in 2021, but the list is still limited compared to other states.
- Epilepsy
- Seizure Disorders
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Spasticity
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Terminal Cancer
- Autism
- PTSD
- Any incurable neurodegenerative disease
Unlike other states, conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia do NOT qualify in Texas. The program is specifically designed for severe, treatment-resistant conditions.
Finding a Doctor
Texas requires prescriptions from doctors registered with the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT). Not all doctors are registered.
CURT-Registered Physicians
$150 - $300Search for doctors registered with the state's Compassionate Use Registry. These doctors have completed training and can prescribe low-THC cannabis.
Telehealth Services
$150 - $250Some telehealth companies now offer Texas CUP evaluations. Make sure they specifically mention Texas and CURT registration.
Your Specialist
Regular copayIf you see a neurologist, oncologist, or other specialist for your condition, ask if they're CURT-registered. Many specialists treating qualifying conditions have registered.
Tip: The Texas dispensaries (Goodblend, Compassionate Cultivation, Fluent) often maintain lists of CURT-registered doctors on their websites.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the 1% THC products actually work?
For some patients, yes. Many Texas CUP patients report benefits, especially for seizures, MS symptoms, and PTSD. However, if you're used to regular-strength cannabis, you may find the effects subtle.
Why doesn't chronic pain qualify?
Texas legislators have kept the program narrow. Advocacy groups continue pushing for expansion. The conditions have expanded over time (PTSD and cancer were added in 2021), so changes may come.
Can I use my Texas prescription in other states?
No. Texas prescriptions are only valid in Texas. Since Texas doesn't issue cards, there's nothing to present in other states anyway.
Is recreational coming to Texas?
It's unlikely in the near term given Texas politics. For now, the CUP is the only legal option.
Why can't I smoke the cannabis?
Texas law specifically prohibits smoking as a delivery method. This was a compromise to get the original program passed. Only oils and similar products are legal.
How do I get more product if I run out?
Contact your prescribing doctor. They can adjust your prescription in the CURT system to allow additional purchases if medically necessary.
