Auburn is built around Auburn University and the I-85 corridor connecting Montgomery to the Georgia line; university staff, students, and a growing base of aerospace and tech suppliers drive much of the local economy. The closest working options are Montgomery, about 55 miles southwest via I-85 and US-80 (roughly 1 hour), home to Callie's Apothecary, and Oxford, roughly 70 miles north, where RJK Holdings AL has a planned location.

Montgomery's Atlanta Highway storefront sits inside a conventional retail corridor rather than a stand-alone medical district, so Auburn patients can expect to run other errands during the same trip. Reports from other new counters describe matching the card against a photo ID at check-in, a modest line depending on the hour, and paper money as the more dependable way to pay, with no indication Montgomery runs any differently. Auburn University's faculty and staff, together with a growing base of aerospace and automotive-supplier employees drawn by the university's engineering programs, make up much of the local patient population likely to seek certification for chronic pain or anxiety-related conditions.

Alabama's medical cannabis program is real but still very young. The Darren Wesley 'Iq' Holley Compassion Act passed in 2021 and created the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC), but license awards were tied up in litigation for years afterward. That changed on December 11, 2025, when the AMCC voted to approve dispensary licenses, and on January 8, 2026, three companies were issued licenses: CCS of Alabama, GP6 Wellness, and RJK Holdings AL. Callie's Apothecary, operated by CCS of Alabama, opened in Montgomery on June 4, 2026 as the state's first legally operating dispensary. A second Callie's opened in Talladega on August 28, 2026, and a third, in Bessemer near Birmingham, was expected in September 2026. GP6 Wellness has been building out BamaBloom dispensaries in Athens and Birmingham, also targeted for September 2026, and RJK Holdings AL has approved sites planned for Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne. The AMCC's full approved dispensing list also includes Attalla and Cullman. Integrated cultivation-through-retail licenses remained under administrative review in 2026.
Recreational cannabis is illegal statewide - a misdemeanor on a first personal-use offense, with felony exposure for repeat or larger-quantity possession. Only registered patients with a valid Alabama medical cannabis card may purchase, and only in person; the program does not allow delivery.
Separately, hemp-derived THC products (HB 445, fully effective January 2026) are regulated by the ABC Board - sold only in licensed stores to buyers 21+, capped at 10 mg THC per serving and 40 mg per package, no delivery. Smokable hemp and THC vapes are banned outright, with felony exposure for sellers since July 2025. This is a separate system from the AMCC medical program.

Expect the approved-city list to keep growing through the rest of 2026, with Southeast Alabama and the Shoals the most likely gaps to close next given how many cities in this guide still have no nearby counter.
