The Orchard Cannabis Guide: Dothan, Alabama

Where people in The Orchard actually buy, what it costs, and what is legal in Dothan, Alabama as of September 2026.

Informational only. We don’t sell or deliver cannabis and we’re not a dispensary.

The Orchard Overview

The Orchard is one of the newer subdivisions that has filled in on Dothan's growing edges, built out with contemporary single-family construction on planned streets rather than the older grid closer to the center. Buyers here are often relocating for work at the hospital system or the area's agricultural processing employers. New construction has not brought new cannabis access, because licensing is a state matter and the commission has approved nothing in southeast Alabama. The nearest counter remains the capital, two hours northwest.

Delivery in The Orchard

A new subdivision is served by every delivery category except this one, which the state excluded from off-premises transactions entirely. The drive northwest is the only lawful route to a dispensary.

Local Pricing

New-build neighborhoods pay the same state charges as older ones, and no Wiregrass counter exists to price against. Budget for the enrollment fee, the card, and a long round trip.

The Orchard FAQ

Does the commission add new cities regularly?

It has been adding stores within already-approved cities rather than expanding the list. No southeast Alabama approval has been announced as of September 2026.

How long is a certification appointment?

That depends entirely on the practice. What matters is that the physician holds current state medical board registration and enters your condition into the registry.

Can I be certified by telehealth?

Alabama's rules govern how certification must occur, so confirm with the practice whether it can complete the process remotely or requires an in-person visit.

Market Overview

Cannabis in The Orchard, Dothan

Dothan anchors the Wiregrass region and its peanut-farming economy at the junction of US-231 and US-84, with Southeast Health as the area's dominant hospital system. Of every city in this guide, it sits farthest from an approved dispensing site, and the AMCC has not put it on its dispensing list either. The nearest options are Montgomery, home of the state's first operating dispensary, and Oxford, where RJK Holdings AL has a planned location - both roughly 90 miles or more from Dothan (about 1 hour 45 minutes or longer).
Wiregrass-region patients should factor in a significant drive until a Southeast Alabama site is approved.
Neither Montgomery's Atlanta Highway store nor Oxford's planned RJK Holdings AL site sits particularly close to downtown Dothan, so patients should treat the trip as a dedicated errand rather than a stop along another route. Expect a card-and-photo-ID check-in with a short wait, and bring cash since card processing remains limited at cannabis counters statewide. Southeast Health, the Wiregrass region's dominant hospital system, along with the area's peanut-processing and agricultural employers, form the core of the local patient base likely to seek certification once a Southeast Alabama site is finally approved.
The regulatory side - certification, the fees, the fixed menu, the dosing limit - is statewide and already covered above; this page only tracks local access.

Alabama Statewide Context

Alabama's medical cannabis program is real but still very young. The Darren Wesley 'Ato' Hall Compassion Act passed in 2021 and created the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC), but license awards were tied up in litigation for years afterward. That changed on December 11, 2025, when the AMCC voted to approve dispensary licenses, and on January 8, 2026, three companies were issued licenses: CCS of Alabama, GP6 Wellness, and RJK Holdings AL. A fourth award, to Yellowhammer, was stayed pending an administrative challenge.
Callie's Apothecary, operated by CCS of Alabama, opened in Montgomery on June 4, 2026 as the state's first legally operating dispensary. A second Callie's opened at 309 Battle Street West in Talladega on August 28, 2026, and a third, in Bessemer near Birmingham, was expected in September 2026. GP6 Wellness has been building out BamaBloom dispensaries in Athens and Birmingham, also targeted for September 2026, with a third GP6 site approved for Attalla in Etowah County, and RJK Holdings AL has approved sites planned for Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne. That is the whole approved map: nine cities across three licensees. CCS moved its third site from Cullman to Bessemer before opening, so Cullman is not an approved location.
Recreational cannabis is illegal statewide - a misdemeanor on a first personal-use offense, with felony exposure for repeat or larger-quantity possession. Only registered patients with a valid Alabama medical cannabis card may purchase, and only in person; the program does not allow delivery.
Separately, hemp-derived THC products (HB 445, fully effective January 2026) are regulated by the ABC Board - sold only in licensed stores to buyers 21+, capped at 10 mg THC per serving and 40 mg per package, no delivery. Smokable hemp is banned outright: since July 1, 2025, selling or simply possessing hemp flower, pre-rolls or hemp cigars is a Class C felony carrying up to ten years, and prosecutors have applied the same reading to THC vapes. Retail sales also carry a 10 percent excise tax. This is a separate system from the AMCC medical program.

Shopping Guide

What to Buy in The Orchard

Product availability in The Orchard, Dothan follows Alabama regulations. Here's what's available and what to expect:

🌿 Flower

Raw, smokable flower is prohibited under Alabama's medical program and is not sold at any licensed dispensary. There is no pending rule change that would add it.

💨 Vape Cartridges

Vape cartridges are not sold in Alabama's medical program - anything meant to be vaped or smoked is excluded. The only inhaled forms permitted are liquids for a nebulizer or medical inhaler device. Hemp-derived THC vapes fall on the wrong side of HB 445's smokable ban as police and prosecutors have read it, which since July 1, 2025 makes possession as well as sale a Class C felony.

🚬 Pre-Rolls

Pre-rolled joints are not available, since raw flower and smoking are both excluded from the medical program.

🍫 Edibles

Approved forms are non-sugar-coated gelatinous cubes/cuboids, lozenges, tablets, and capsules - not gummies or baked goods. Daily dosing is capped at 50 mg of delta-9 THC (up to 75 mg after 90 days of continuous care with physician sign-off).

💎 Concentrates

Alabama does not sell dabbable concentrates such as wax or shatter. Concentrated oils only appear in approved delivery forms - tinctures, topicals, transdermal patches, and inhaler/nebulizer liquids.

💧 Tinctures & Oils

Tinctures and oils are among the core approved categories and one of the more widely stocked forms at open dispensaries. They are taken sublingually for relatively fast onset and precise, incremental dosing.

🧴 Topicals

Topical gels, oils, and creams are approved for localized relief without significant psychoactive effect. Transdermal patches offer a slower, sustained-release alternative.
