Providence Cannabis Guide: Huntsville, Alabama

Where people in Providence actually buy, what it costs, and what is legal in Huntsville, Alabama as of September 2026.

Informational only. We don’t sell or deliver cannabis and we’re not a dispensary.

Providence Overview

Providence is the traditional-neighborhood development off Old Monrovia Road on the northwest side, built around a village main street with a town hall, shops and a mix of cottages, townhomes and apartments. The city designated it one of its arts and entertainment districts. Its northwest position puts it closer to the Limestone County line than most of Huntsville, which is the only cannabis-relevant advantage available, since no licensed dispensary operates anywhere in Madison County and the Athens build is the nearest approved site.

Delivery in Providence

A designed-for-walking village still cannot receive a cannabis delivery, because Alabama licenses none. What Providence does gain is a shorter drive, with the westbound highway reachable in a few minutes from Old Monrovia Road.

Local Pricing

Village retail pricing has no equivalent in cannabis, where a single unopened counter serves the whole region. Fifty dollars covers the state's first-year fees; everything else is quoted at the register.

Providence FAQ

Do the entertainment district rules affect cannabis?

No. Alabama entertainment districts govern open alcohol containers in defined areas. Cannabis consumption in public remains prohibited everywhere in the state.

Is Providence the closest Huntsville neighborhood to Athens?

It is among them, along with the research park and the western Madison County edge. All shave a few minutes off the trip compared with downtown or the south side.

Can I renew a card without a new certification?

Renewal involves both the commission and your certifying physician, so plan on a follow-up visit rather than assuming registration renews on its own.

Market Overview

Cannabis in Providence, Huntsville

Huntsville grew around Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and its Cummings Research Park workforce of aerospace and defense contractors gives it a different economic base than most cities in this guide. Despite that scale, it is not on the AMCC's current list of approved dispensing locations. The nearest approved site is Athens, about 20 miles northwest via US-72 (roughly 25 minutes), where GP6 Wellness has been building out a BamaBloom dispensary.
Huntsville sits close enough to the Tennessee line to matter here: Tennessee has no legal cannabis program at all, so the Athens drive remains the only lawful path to a counter.
The Athens BamaBloom site sits just off US-72 rather than deep inside a retail center, making it a quick stop for Huntsville patients routing through on the way to or from the Shoals. Once open, expect the standard check-in - card, photo ID, and a short wait - with cash the safer bet at a store this new. Beyond Redstone Arsenal's uniformed personnel, Huntsville's civilian aerospace-contractor workforce, spread across dozens of Cummings Research Park tenants, adds a large population of patients likely to qualify for chronic-pain or PTSD-related conditions.
For how to get a card, what it costs, what is legal to sell, and how much THC a day - skip up to the state guide above; none of that is local.

Alabama Statewide Context

Alabama's medical cannabis program is real but still very young. The Darren Wesley 'Ato' Hall Compassion Act passed in 2021 and created the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC), but license awards were tied up in litigation for years afterward. That changed on December 11, 2025, when the AMCC voted to approve dispensary licenses, and on January 8, 2026, three companies were issued licenses: CCS of Alabama, GP6 Wellness, and RJK Holdings AL. A fourth award, to Yellowhammer, was stayed pending an administrative challenge.
Callie's Apothecary, operated by CCS of Alabama, opened in Montgomery on June 4, 2026 as the state's first legally operating dispensary. A second Callie's opened at 309 Battle Street West in Talladega on August 28, 2026, and a third, in Bessemer near Birmingham, was expected in September 2026. GP6 Wellness has been building out BamaBloom dispensaries in Athens and Birmingham, also targeted for September 2026, with a third GP6 site approved for Attalla in Etowah County, and RJK Holdings AL has approved sites planned for Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne. That is the whole approved map: nine cities across three licensees. CCS moved its third site from Cullman to Bessemer before opening, so Cullman is not an approved location.
Recreational cannabis is illegal statewide - a misdemeanor on a first personal-use offense, with felony exposure for repeat or larger-quantity possession. Only registered patients with a valid Alabama medical cannabis card may purchase, and only in person; the program does not allow delivery.
Separately, hemp-derived THC products (HB 445, fully effective January 2026) are regulated by the ABC Board - sold only in licensed stores to buyers 21+, capped at 10 mg THC per serving and 40 mg per package, no delivery. Smokable hemp is banned outright: since July 1, 2025, selling or simply possessing hemp flower, pre-rolls or hemp cigars is a Class C felony carrying up to ten years, and prosecutors have applied the same reading to THC vapes. Retail sales also carry a 10 percent excise tax. This is a separate system from the AMCC medical program.

Shopping Guide

What to Buy in Providence

Product availability in Providence, Huntsville follows Alabama regulations. Here's what's available and what to expect:

🌿 Flower

Raw, smokable flower is prohibited under Alabama's medical program and is not sold at any licensed dispensary. There is no pending rule change that would add it.

💨 Vape Cartridges

Vape cartridges are not sold in Alabama's medical program - anything meant to be vaped or smoked is excluded. The only inhaled forms permitted are liquids for a nebulizer or medical inhaler device. Hemp-derived THC vapes fall on the wrong side of HB 445's smokable ban as police and prosecutors have read it, which since July 1, 2025 makes possession as well as sale a Class C felony.

🚬 Pre-Rolls

Pre-rolled joints are not available, since raw flower and smoking are both excluded from the medical program.

🍫 Edibles

Approved forms are non-sugar-coated gelatinous cubes/cuboids, lozenges, tablets, and capsules - not gummies or baked goods. Daily dosing is capped at 50 mg of delta-9 THC (up to 75 mg after 90 days of continuous care with physician sign-off).

💎 Concentrates

Alabama does not sell dabbable concentrates such as wax or shatter. Concentrated oils only appear in approved delivery forms - tinctures, topicals, transdermal patches, and inhaler/nebulizer liquids.

💧 Tinctures & Oils

Tinctures and oils are among the core approved categories and one of the more widely stocked forms at open dispensaries. They are taken sublingually for relatively fast onset and precise, incremental dosing.

🧴 Topicals

Topical gels, oils, and creams are approved for localized relief without significant psychoactive effect. Transdermal patches offer a slower, sustained-release alternative.
