Out The Road Overview

Out the Road is what Juneau calls everything past Auke Bay, where Glacier Highway continues about twenty-five miles to Echo Cove and then stops, having connected to nothing. Cabins, homesteads, Amalga Harbor and the shrine at Point Louisa line the way, and the pavement ends at a boat launch facing water that leads to the rest of Alaska. Residents plan around distance for everything, and cannabis is a Valley errand attached to a grocery run rather than something anyone drives back for.

Delivery in Out The Road

The delivery ban lands hardest at the end of a road that goes nowhere. People out here buy on a town day, and store hours matter more than store choice when the round trip runs close to an hour.

Local Pricing

Nobody makes this drive for an eighth. Ounce purchases dominate, and the per-gram math is what justifies the fuel and the hour on the road.

Market Overview

Cannabis in Out The Road, Juneau

Juneau is the only American state capital with no road connection to the rest of its state, which turns every logistical question into a shipping question. Around 32,000 people live on a strip of land between Gastineau Channel and the Juneau Icefield, and in summer a million-plus cruise passengers pass through the downtown docks. Cannabis is legal, visible and easy to buy here, and the wrinkle for visitors is not access but the total absence of a legal place to consume.

State rules apply without a municipal marijuana tax layered on, though the city and borough sales tax hits the receipt like it does on any other purchase. Buying is face to face at a licensed counter, capped at an ounce a day, and nothing may be brought aboard a cruise ship, a ferry berth, a floatplane or the airport, all of which fall under federal or carrier rules that override state legality. Consuming outdoors on the docks, at Marine Park or on a trail is a $100 fine.

Retail sorts itself by geography along the one road. Downtown carries walk-up counters within blocks of the cruise berths, including The Fireweed Factory at 237 Front Street and Green Elephant at 101 Mill Street. The Lemon Creek corridor between downtown and the Valley holds the workaday cluster near the industrial park and big-box shopping. The Mendenhall Valley, where most Juneau families actually live, has its own stores off Glacier Highway. Douglas Island keeps a smaller presence across the bridge, and the roadless communities of Southeast look to Juneau as their supply hub.

Alaska Statewide Context

Alaska runs a full adult-use market under the Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office and its five-member Marijuana Control Board. Ballot Measure 2 passed in November 2014, personal possession and home cultivation became legal on February 24, 2015, and commercial sales started on October 29, 2016 when Herbal Outfitters opened in Valdez. AMCO's active license list carried 209 retail marijuana stores in September 2026, spread from Ketchikan to Utqiagvik, and Alaska was one of the few states that added licensees in early 2026 while national counts kept falling.

Buying is strictly in person. Regulations let a store sell only to a customer standing on the licensed premises or waiting at a designated window or curbside pickup spot, so you can order online but you cannot have cannabis brought to your door, your hotel, or your village. A store may not sell one person more than an ounce of usable flower, seven grams of inhalable concentrate, or 5,600 milligrams of THC in combined products per day. Edibles are capped at 10 milligrams of THC per serving and 100 milligrams per package, a limit doubled in September 2021.

Alaska has no state sales tax and no percentage tax at the register. Instead cultivators pay a weight-based excise when product leaves the farm: $50 an ounce for bud, $25 for immature bud, and $15 for trim. That cost is baked into shelf prices before any local tax. Anchorage adds a 5% municipal marijuana sales tax and the Fairbanks North Star Borough adds 5%.

Three things shifted in 2025 and 2026. A federal judge upheld Alaska's restrictions on intoxicating hemp in May 2025, keeping delta-8 and similar products out of gas stations and inside licensed stores. The Anchorage Assembly approved edible-only consumption inside retail shops but indefinitely postponed smoking cafes in October 2025. And House Bill 91, which would cut the $50 ounce tax and swap it for a 6% sales tax, still had not passed as of late August 2026.

Shopping Guide

What to Buy in Out The Road

Product availability in Out The Road, Juneau follows Alaska regulations. Here's what's available and what to expect:

🌿 Flower

Flower is the backbone of the Alaska market, most of it grown indoors under lights because the outdoor season is short. Expect small-batch runs, frequent strain rotation, and a one-ounce daily purchase cap.

💨 Vape Cartridges

Cartridges and disposables from Alaska manufacturers such as Top Hat Concentrates and X-Tracted Laboratories fill most vape shelves. Cold weather thickens oil, so carts sold here are often formulated to keep flowing in a jacket pocket.

🚬 Pre-Rolls

Singles, multi-packs, and infused rolls are stocked everywhere and are the cheapest way to sample a farm before buying an eighth. Freshness varies widely between shops, so check the pack date on the label.

🍫 Edibles

State rules cap edibles at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package, doubled from 5 mg and 50 mg in September 2021. Gummies, chocolates, and baked goods from licensed kitchens like Baked Alaska and Lady Gray Gourmet Medibles are the common formats.

💎 Concentrates

Live resin, badder, shatter, and solventless hash are all made in state. The daily cap is seven grams of inhalable concentrate, though the Marijuana Control Board took up a proposal in September 2026 to repeal that ceiling and adjourned without voting.

💧 Tinctures & Oils

Tinctures and oils are a smaller category here, useful in dry cabins and shared housing where smoke is not an option. Dosing follows the same 10 mg per serving rule as other ingestibles.

🧴 Topicals

Balms and salves aimed at cold-weather joints and commercial fishing hands sell steadily, especially in coastal towns. They are non-intoxicating and sold only through licensed stores.

Brands

Everything on an Alaska shelf is grown, made, and tested inside Alaska, because nothing can cross a state line. Names carried on the AMCO license roll and rotating through menus statewide include Top Hat Concentrates in Juneau, X-Tracted Laboratories in Talkeetna, Cold Creek Extracts in Houston, Greatland Ganja in Kasilof and Denali Fire Extracts in Anchorage for extracts and carts; and Baked Alaska and Arctic Bakery in Fairbanks, Momo's Bakery and Cultivated Confections in Anchorage, Lady Gray Gourmet Medibles in Soldotna and Kreative Konfections in Wasilla for edibles.
