Japonski Island Cannabis Guide: Sitka, Alaska

Where people in Japonski Island actually buy, what it costs, and what is legal in Sitka, Alaska as of September 2026.

Informational only. We don’t sell or deliver cannabis and we’re not a dispensary.

Japonski Island Overview

Japonski Island sits across the O'Connell Bridge from downtown and holds the airport, the SEARHC hospital campus, Mount Edgecumbe High School and a Coast Guard presence, which makes it the most federally entangled ground in Sitka. Students board at the high school from villages across the region. The rule here is unambiguous: the airport terminal and every aircraft using it fall under federal jurisdiction, so a legal Sitka purchase cannot cross into the departure area or onto a plane.

Delivery in Japonski Island

Alaska allows no delivery, and this island is the last place you would want one. Residents and staff cross the bridge into town and out Sawmill Creek Road, roughly ten minutes each way.

Local Pricing

Island prices apply the same on both sides of the bridge, and hospital staff working long shifts tend to buy larger amounts to avoid repeat trips across town.

Japonski Island FAQ

Can I bring cannabis to the airport?

No. Airports and aircraft are governed by federal law.

What is on Japonski Island?

The airport, the regional hospital, Mount Edgecumbe High School and Coast Guard facilities.

How do I get there?

Across the O'Connell Bridge from downtown.

Market Overview

Cannabis in Japonski Island, Sitka

Sitka is the only Southeast community that faces the open Pacific rather than a protected channel, spread along Baranof Island under the cone of Mount Edgecumbe with roughly 8,400 residents and fourteen miles of road that dead-end at both ends. It was the Russian colonial capital, the site of the 1867 transfer ceremony on Castle Hill, and it now runs on commercial fishing, health care and a cruise season that has grown sharply in the past few years.

Buying works the same way it does anywhere in Alaska: 21 and older, valid photo ID, an ounce a day, in person. Two details matter more here than on the mainland. Registers are usually cash only, so plan on an ATM stop before the store. And Sitka National Historical Park, the totem park at the mouth of Indian River, is National Park Service ground where federal law governs, meaning a legal Alaska purchase becomes a federal problem the moment you walk in with it.

Retail is concentrated on the Sawmill Creek Road side of town. Weed Dudes operates at 1321 Sawmill Creek Road in the Sawmill Creek Plaza, and Northern Lights Indoor Gardens holds both retail and cultivation licenses on the island, which means some of what sells here was grown a few miles away rather than barged in. Downtown along Lincoln Street is the visitor core near the cruise lightering dock, Halibut Point Road runs north to the Old Sitka Dock, and everything in between is reachable in under fifteen minutes.

Alaska Statewide Context

Alaska runs a full adult-use market under the Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office and its five-member Marijuana Control Board. Ballot Measure 2 passed in November 2014, personal possession and home cultivation became legal on February 24, 2015, and commercial sales started on October 29, 2016 when Herbal Outfitters opened in Valdez. Close to 200 retail store licenses appeared on the state renewal list for the 2025-2026 license year, spread from Ketchikan to Nome, and Alaska was one of the few states that added licensees in early 2026 while national counts kept falling.

Buying is strictly in person. Regulations let a store sell only to a customer standing on the licensed premises or waiting at a designated window or curbside pickup spot, so you can order online but you cannot have cannabis brought to your door, your hotel, or your village. A store may not sell one person more than an ounce of usable flower, seven grams of inhalable concentrate, or 5,600 milligrams of THC in combined products per day. Edibles are capped at 10 milligrams of THC per serving and 100 milligrams per package, a limit doubled in September 2021.

Alaska has no state sales tax and no percentage tax at the register. Instead cultivators pay a weight-based excise when product leaves the farm: $50 an ounce for bud, $25 for immature bud, and $15 for trim. That cost is baked into shelf prices before any local tax. Anchorage adds a 5% municipal marijuana sales tax and the Fairbanks North Star Borough adds 5%.

Three things shifted in 2025 and 2026. A federal judge upheld Alaska's restrictions on intoxicating hemp in May 2025, keeping delta-8 and similar products out of gas stations and inside licensed stores. The Anchorage Assembly approved edible-only consumption inside retail shops but indefinitely postponed smoking cafes in October 2025. And House Bill 91, which would cut the $50 ounce tax and swap it for a 6% sales tax, still had not passed as of late August 2026.

Shopping Guide

What to Buy in Japonski Island

Product availability in Japonski Island, Sitka follows Alaska regulations. Here's what's available and what to expect:

🌿 Flower

Flower is the backbone of the Alaska market, most of it grown indoors under lights because the outdoor season is short. Expect small-batch runs, frequent strain rotation, and a one-ounce daily purchase cap.

💨 Vape Cartridges

Cartridges and disposables from Alaska manufacturers such as Top Hat Concentrates and X-Tracted Laboratories fill most vape shelves. Cold weather thickens oil, so carts sold here are often formulated to keep flowing in a jacket pocket.

🚬 Pre-Rolls

Singles, multi-packs, and infused rolls are stocked everywhere and are the cheapest way to sample a farm before buying an eighth. Freshness varies widely between shops, so check the pack date on the label.

🍫 Edibles

State rules cap edibles at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package, doubled from 5 mg and 50 mg in September 2021. Gummies, chocolates, and baked goods from licensed kitchens like Baked Alaska and Lady Gray Gourmet Medibles are the common formats.

💎 Concentrates

Live resin, badder, shatter, and solventless hash are all made in state. The daily cap is seven grams of inhalable concentrate, though the Marijuana Control Board took up a proposal in September 2026 to repeal that ceiling.

💧 Tinctures & Oils

Tinctures and oils are a smaller category here, useful in dry cabins and shared housing where smoke is not an option. Dosing follows the same 10 mg per serving rule as other ingestibles.

🧴 Topicals

Balms and salves aimed at cold-weather joints and commercial fishing hands sell steadily, especially in coastal towns. They are non-intoxicating and sold only through licensed stores.
