Avon Cannabis Guide: Vail, Colorado

Vail Village's Bavarian-inspired architecture, built to evoke a Tyrolean alpine town when the resort opened in 1962, sits below the largest single ski mountain in Colorado - and the town has never licensed a cannabis store inside its own limits, leaving Avon and the Eagle-Vail stretch of US-6 to absorb all of the dispensary demand from Vail's visitors and workforce.

That has not changed, and it still shapes where visitors actually shop: Vail Village and Lionshead Village, the resort's two main pedestrian base areas, draw the heaviest tourist foot traffic, while every licensed store in the valley sits west of town, four of them along a single stretch of US Highway 6 in Avon.

Eagle County's broader workforce, similar to the Aspen area's Highway 82 commute, spreads across Avon, Eagle-Vail, Edwards, Minturn, Eagle, and Gypsum along the I-70 and Highway 6 corridor - though only Avon, Edwards and Eagle actually hold retail licences, and the rest commute to them. A shop that ranks for Avon, Edwards or Eagle-Vail by name is exactly what someone staying in Vail but shopping nearby is searching for. Beaver Creek, the gated resort just south of Avon, adds its own small slice of upscale demand to that same valley-wide retail picture.

Colorado voters passed Amendment 64 in November 2012, and the first legal recreational sales in the country happened here on January 1, 2014, alongside Washington State. Fourteen years later, in September 2026, Colorado runs one of the most mature, price-competitive cannabis markets in America, with hundreds of licensed dispensaries from downtown Denver to ski towns above 9,000 feet.

Retail works through the Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED), inside the Colorado Department of Revenue, which licenses every cultivator, processor, and store. Adults 21+ buy without a medical card anywhere in the state; registered medical patients pay less tax and carry more product. Delivery remains the exception, not the rule. State law lets each city decide for itself, and most of Colorado hasn't opted in - as of September 2026 the state lists just ten retail delivery permits, held in Denver, Aurora, Broomfield and Westminster, while Colorado Springs bans delivery outright. Colorado's cannabis brands are largely homegrown and have operated since the market's early years. Wana Brands, founded in Boulder, is the top-selling edibles brand in North America and stocks nearly every Colorado dispensary shelf; Incredibles is the other long-running Denver-based edibles name most shoppers recognize. On the flower and concentrate side, 710 Labs and Green Dot Labs are the two names Colorado's craft-cannabis scene built its reputation on, both known for small-batch, pesticide-free growing and premium live rosin. For vapes, beverages, and topicals, ask the counter staff which brand posts current lab results (a Certificate of Analysis) for the specific batch on the shelf - Colorado requires testing, but potency and freshness still vary store to store.

The 2025-2026 story in Colorado is Colorado Springs finally joining the recreational market after more than a decade of local prohibition, instantly adding the state's second-largest city and its existing medical dispensary base to the adult-use map. Delivery adoption is spreading slowly rather than statewide - watch for more Front Range suburbs following Denver and Aurora's lead rather than a single new state law. Consumption lounges keep expanding past Denver's early adopters as more cities issue hospitality licenses, giving tourists a legal place to use product that still can't be smoked in most hotel rooms or on public streets.
