Daytona Beach built its identity on speed — the hard-packed sand that hosted early stock car racing before Daytona International Speedway existed, and the Daytona 500 that still draws hundreds of thousands of race fans every February. That event calendar, along with Bike Week's motorcycle rally each spring, brings waves of out-of-state visitors who mostly can't buy under Florida's medical-only law, no matter how many times they've made the pilgrimage.

Beyond the beach and Speedway, Volusia County stretches inland to the historic river town of DeLand, home to Stetson University, and further to DeBary and Deltona along the St. Johns River basin, giving the metro a patient base that ranges from beachfront condo retirees to inland commuter families. New Smyrna Beach to the south adds another distinct beach community with its own surf culture separate from Daytona's racing identity.

Dispensary storefronts cluster along International Speedway Boulevard and Nova Road in central Daytona, with additional stores reaching south toward Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach and inland toward DeLand. The beachfront strip has nothing licensed on it, which is less a policy decision than a rent one: A1A frontage costs what hotels pay, and a dispensary does not need an ocean view. Florida legalized medical marijuana by constitutional amendment in 2016 and has never taken the recreational step since. What exists instead is a large, vertically integrated medical program: a single MMTC license lets one company grow, process, and sell its own product line through its own storefronts, which is why brand selection varies by chain rather than by neighborhood. Roughly 22 licensed MMTCs now operate close to 778 dispensary locations, led by Trulieve's network of more than 170 stores, MÜV's 86-plus locations, Curaleaf Florida's 74, Ayr's 65, and Surterra Wellness's 44, with Sunnyside and Green Dragon filling regional gaps.

Access is narrower than the store count suggests. Only Florida residents and qualified seasonal residents who complete an in-person exam and carry a diagnosed qualifying condition can register; there's no reciprocity for an out-of-state card. Registered patients pay no state sales tax on purchases and can order home delivery, but cannot legally grow their own plants — home cultivation was never authorized.

Patient and dispensary counts both hit records in summer 2026, with OMMU reporting more than 940,000 active cardholders by late August. Outside the MMTC system, hemp-derived drinks and gummies under 0.3% Delta-9 THC remain legal at gas stations after DeSantis vetoed a 2024 cap, though a federal rule limiting hemp products to 0.4mg of THC per container takes effect in November 2026 and will force much of that shelf to change.

Every Florida MMTC license is vertically integrated, so the brand on the jar is always the same company that owns the storefront — there's no independent grower selling into a dispensary the way there might be in a state with separate licenses. Trulieve is the network to know first, with more than 170 stores and the deepest flower and edible catalog in the state. MÜV (AltMed) runs 86-plus locations with a strong vape and gummy lineup, Curaleaf Florida covers roughly 74 stores, Ayr Cannabis Dispensary has 65, and Surterra Wellness has 44. Sunnyside (Cresco Labs) and Green Dragon fill in additional metros. Selection varies store to store depending on that week's harvest, so the same chain can carry different strains two towns apart.
