Neither Sanibel nor Fort Myers Beach carries licensed retail, so barrier-island patients wait on a driver crossing from the mainland. Rebuilding has kept new commercial leases scarce out there, which makes that unlikely to change while construction continues.

Florida legalized medical marijuana by constitutional amendment in 2016 and has never taken the recreational step since.
