The city itself has grown rapidly along the SR-200 corridor south of downtown, a commercial strip that has absorbed most of Ocala's newer retail and residential development as the metro's population has climbed. Silver Springs State Park to the northeast and the Ocala National Forest further east add a rural, outdoor-recreation dimension to a metro area otherwise defined by horse farms and retirement communities.
