Two large universities, Florida State and Florida A&M, add a substantial student population to a city whose economy otherwise runs on state government employment, and the legislative session each spring brings a wave of lobbyists, staff, and visitors who mostly can't buy without a Florida card of their own. North Tallahassee's established neighborhoods like Killearn and the lakefront homes around Lake Jackson add a steadier, more suburban patient base less tied to the academic or legislative calendar.

Dispensary storefronts cluster along Thomasville Road and West Tennessee Street, with additional stores reaching into the fast-growing Bradfordville suburb to the northeast. Nothing licensed sits inside College Town by FSU's stadium, where the ground-floor space belongs to bars and the rent assumes a football crowd. Qualifying students and staff either take delivery or drive the few minutes over to Thomasville Road, which most of them do anyway on their way somewhere else.

Florida legalized medical marijuana by constitutional amendment in 2016 and has never taken the recreational step since. Amendment 3 came closest in November 2024, pulling 56% of the vote against the 60% supermajority the constitution requires, and a second attempt for the 2026 ballot collapsed when organizers came up roughly 100,000 signatures short of the 880,000 required after the state disqualified tens of thousands of mailed and out-of-state-collected petitions.
