Augusta sits on the Savannah River across from South Carolina and is known worldwide for Augusta National and the Masters Tournament each April, an event that briefly triples the city's population with visitors who often assume cannabis rules match wherever they flew in from. Augusta-Richmond County's consolidated government decriminalized possession under 1 ounce in August 2019, setting a $150 fine and removing jail time for a first offense handled by city or county police.

That ordinance has no bearing on state troopers or on Fort Eisenhower, the massive Army post (formerly Fort Gordon) just southwest of the city, where federal law bars cannabis outright regardless of any Georgia card. Medical access for the region runs through Trulieve's dispensary in Evans, just across the Columbia County line.

Trulieve's Evans storefront sits along Washington Road, the same corridor Masters patrons drive every spring on their way to Augusta National - a retail stretch any Columbia County business owner already recognizes as the area's main commercial strip outside downtown Augusta itself. CSRA-area patients from as far as Waynesboro and Thomson typically make Evans their default stop rather than driving into Atlanta. Fort Eisenhower, the massive Army post southwest of the city, remains federal property where cannabis stays fully prohibited no matter what a Georgia card allows off base.

Georgia legalized a narrow medical cannabis program in 2015 and spent nearly a decade building almost nothing on top of it - dispensaries did not open until 2023, and the product list stayed frozen at low-THC oil, capsules, and topicals capped at 5% THC. That changed on May 12, 2026, when Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 220, the Putting Georgia's Patients First Act, and most of its provisions took effect July 1, 2026. As of mid-2026, roughly 34,500 Georgians are registered - still the lowest enrollment rate of any state with a legal program - and that number is expected to climb as easier qualification and a broader product menu reach more physicians' offices.

The retail side has grown alongside the law. As of August 2026 the GMCC lists about 20 licensed dispensary locations statewide, split between Trulieve and Botanical Sciences as the two largest operators, plus roughly 72 independent pharmacies licensed by the Georgia Board of Pharmacy - Georgia was the first state to let ordinary pharmacies dispense medical cannabis. Recreational cannabis remains fully illegal, with no adult-use bill near passage. Separately, low-dose hemp-derived THC drinks and edibles (10 mg per serving, 21+) are legal under 2024's SB 494, but that law also outlawed smokable hemp flower and most delta-8/delta-10/THCA products - enforcement has pulled those off shelves since late 2024. A short list of cities has separately decriminalized small amounts of marijuana by ordinance, which lowers the local fine but does not make possession legal.

Trulieve and Botanical Sciences are Georgia's two largest licensed operators as of 2026, together running most of the roughly 20 open dispensary locations statewide - Trulieve in Macon, Marietta, Newnan, Pooler, Evans, and Columbus; Botanical Sciences in Marietta, Pooler, Chamblee, Stockbridge, and the Atlanta metro.
