State Farm Insurance has been headquartered in Bloomington since 1922 and remains one of the largest employers in the state, bringing a stable, well-paid white-collar workforce into the local dispensary customer base alongside Illinois State University's roughly 20,000 students in adjacent Normal.

That corporate presence gives Bloomington-Normal a different economic profile than most central Illinois cities of similar size - steadier employment, less dependent on any single manufacturing plant, and a customer base with disposable income comparable to some Chicago suburbs despite downstate pricing on rent and retail.
