The College Park-UMD Metro station on the Green and Yellow lines gives students and faculty a direct rail connection to Washington DC, a fact that matters given how easy it is to forget the district doesn't share Maryland's retail rules.

The city's off-campus retail runs along Route 1, the main commercial spine connecting campus to the surrounding neighborhoods of Old Town, Berwyn, and Calvert Hills. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center sits nearby in neighboring Greenbelt, adding a federal-employment dimension to a market otherwise dominated by student demand. Enforcement of the 21-and-up rule here is strict, and cannabis is never permitted on university property regardless of a student's age.

Maryland's cannabis market has moved past its launch phase into steady, heavily-taxed maturity. On-site consumption licences have existed on paper since the 2023 Cannabis Reform Act, with a statutory ceiling of 50 statewide; SB215 in 2025 repealed the plan to issue up to 15 of them in the second licensing round, restricted applications to social-equity applicants, and allowed vaping and single-serving edibles but no indoor smoking. MCA had still not issued a single lounge licence as of this writing.

Home cultivation stays legal for adults 21+, capped at two plants per residence regardless of how many adults live there. Social-equity dispensaries are finally opening in real numbers after a slow 2024-2025, though still only a fraction of the 83 licenses awarded have converted into working stores.
