The rest of the year moves at a dramatically calmer pace, with the same storefronts serving a much smaller, mostly local customer base.

Salem sits on the MBTA Commuter Rail line directly into Boston's North Station, a roughly 30-minute ride that makes the city a realistic day trip destination even for visitors without a car - and that same rail line brings a fair number of cannabis-curious tourists into town alongside the ghost-tour crowds every October weekend.

Massachusetts voters approved recreational marijuana at the ballot box in November 2016, and the first licensed dispensaries opened in November 2018 - nearly two years before most neighboring states had any adult-use retail at all.
