North Carolina splits into two very different cannabis realities. Simple possession of marijuana still carries real risk statewide. Half an ounce or less is a Class 3 misdemeanor with no jail time and up to a $200 fine - commonly called decriminalized, but still a criminal charge that shows up on a record. Larger amounts escalate quickly: half an ounce to 1.5 ounces is a Class 1 misdemeanor with up to 45 days, and anything above 1.5 ounces up to 10 pounds is a Class I felony.
