North Carolina splits into two very different cannabis realities. Simple possession of marijuana still carries real risk statewide. Half an ounce or less is a Class 3 misdemeanor with no jail time and up to a $200 fine - commonly called decriminalized, but still a criminal charge that shows up on a record. Larger amounts escalate quickly: half an ounce to 1.5 ounces is a Class 1 misdemeanor with up to 45 days, and anything above 1.5 ounces up to 10 pounds is a Class I felony. Because North Carolina has no licensed statewide marijuana retail market, "recommended brands" outside Cherokee means product categories and nationally distributed hemp brands verified to sell into North Carolina - look for third-party lab results (a QR code or batch COA) on any hemp product before buying, since the state does not yet mandate testing.
