Cannabis Consumption Lounges in Washington

One of the first states to legalize cannabis — but still no lounges.

Washington was a cannabis pioneer, legalizing recreational use in 2012 alongside Colorado. However, unlike many other legal states, Washington has NOT authorized cannabis consumption lounges. The state's strict Smoking in Public Places law makes indoor consumption venues inherently problematic. This leaves visitors to Seattle and other cities with limited options for legal consumption outside private property.

Common Questions

Why doesn't Washington have cannabis lounges?

Washington's Smoking in Public Places law prohibits smoking in all public indoor spaces, and the 2012 legalization initiative didn't include social consumption provisions. Cannabis clubs are explicitly banned under state law (RCW 69.50.465). Legislative proposals for exceptions have not advanced.

Can I smoke weed in my hotel room in Seattle?

Most hotels prohibit cannabis. Washington law requires 75% of hotel rooms to be smoke-free, and cannabis policies are typically stricter than tobacco. Some hotels may allow vaping or edibles. Always call ahead and specifically ask about cannabis — don't assume "smoking room" means cannabis is okay.

What happens if I get caught smoking in public?

Public cannabis consumption is a class 3 civil infraction in Washington, carrying a fine of up to $100. You won't go to jail, but you'll get a ticket. Even opening a cannabis package in public view is technically illegal.

Can I smoke at a bar or nightclub in Seattle?

No. Washington's Clean Indoor Air Act prohibits smoking in all bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. There are no exceptions for cannabis. Any bar allowing this would risk losing their liquor license.

What about concert venues?

Concert venues and festivals in Washington do not permit cannabis consumption, even outdoor ones. You may see people consuming, but it's not legal and security may intervene.

Are there any private cannabis clubs in Seattle?

Cannabis clubs are explicitly prohibited under Washington law (RCW 69.50.465). Unlike Oregon where private clubs operate in gray areas, Washington has specifically banned such establishments.

What's my best option as a tourist?

Book 420-friendly accommodations — vacation rentals on sites like Bud & Breakfast or verified 420-friendly Airbnbs. Some local B&Bs also welcome cannabis consumers. This gives you a private space where consumption is legal with owner permission.

Can I consume edibles in public?

Technically, no — Washington law prohibits consuming cannabis in any public place, regardless of method. However, edibles are more discreet than smoking. The law still applies, but enforcement is typically focused on visible smoking.

Will Washington ever get lounges?

Possibly, but it would require legislative action to create exceptions to the Clean Indoor Air Act and explicitly authorize consumption venues. Industry advocates continue to push for lounge legislation, but there's no imminent change expected.

Can I smoke in my car if I'm parked?

No. Consuming cannabis in a vehicle is illegal in Washington, even if parked. Cannabis must also be transported in sealed packaging in the passenger compartment.
