Montana Cannabis Delivery Guide

Medical delivery exists for registered cardholders; recreational is pickup and curbside only

Montana legalized adult-use cannabis in 2020 and opened retail sales on January 1, 2022, but the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act never authorized home delivery for recreational customers. Licensed dispensaries can sell in-store or hand product to you while you wait in a vehicle parked immediately outside, called curbside handoff, and many let you place an order online ahead of time so it is ready when you arrive. Registered medical cardholders are the one group with an actual delivery option: a state administrative rule allows a limited number of licensed dispensaries to hand-deliver directly to a registered patient's address. If you are 21+ without a medical card, plan on pickup or curbside. If you are a registered patient, ask your dispensary whether it offers home delivery before you assume it does, because not every licensed store participates.

Montana Delivery and Pickup Options

Because home delivery is restricted to medical cardholders and only some dispensaries participate, your options depend on whether you hold a Montana medical card.

Registered dispensary medical delivery

Medical cardholders only

A limited number of Montana-licensed dispensaries, or marijuana transporters working under Mont. Admin. R. 42.39.413, deliver directly to a registered patient's address. Availability, coverage area, and minimum order vary by dispensary. Call or check your dispensary's site to confirm it offers delivery before ordering.

Fee: Varies by dispensary Min: Varies by dispensary Time: Varies; same-day is common in areas with an active provider

Online pre-order for in-store pickup

Recreational and medical

Most Montana dispensaries let you browse a menu and submit an order online, then walk in to pay and pick it up. This is the standard path for recreational customers.

Fee: No delivery Min: None state-mandated Time: Same-day, subject to store hours

Curbside handoff

Recreational and medical

State rules allow a dispensary to hand a completed order to a customer waiting in a vehicle parked immediately outside the store. This is not drive-through service; the vehicle must be parked, and staff bring the order out after verifying ID.

How to Order Cannabis in Montana

Whether you end up with delivery or pickup depends on your patient status and which dispensary you use.

1

Check your status: medical cardholder or 21+ recreational

Medical delivery in Montana is limited to registered cardholders. If you do not hold a card, plan on in-store or curbside pickup.

2

Find a dispensary and ask about delivery

If you are a medical cardholder, contact dispensaries near you directly to ask whether they offer home delivery under the state rule; not all licensed stores do.

3

Place your order online or by phone

Browse the dispensary's menu, add your items, and stay within Montana's possession limits. Provide your delivery address if the dispensary delivers, or select pickup or curbside if it does not.

4

Have ID and your medical card ready

Recreational customers need a valid government-issued photo ID showing they are 21+. Medical customers need their Montana medical marijuana card plus photo ID for every transaction, delivery or in-store.

5

Receive your order

For medical delivery, a driver verifies your identity and card at your address before handing over the order. For pickup or curbside, staff verify you at the counter or at your parked vehicle.

6

Pay for your order

Most Montana dispensaries are cash-forward due to federal banking restrictions on cannabis businesses; some offer cashless ATM-style payment.

What to Expect

Montana's rules keep every hand-off tightly identity-checked, whether it happens at your door, your car, or the counter.

  • Medical delivery drivers verify your Montana medical card and photo ID before releasing product at your address
  • Curbside handoff requires your vehicle to be parked immediately outside the dispensary; staff bring the order to you after checking ID
  • Recreational customers cannot have cannabis delivered to a home address under current Montana law
  • Products arrive or are handed over in required exit packaging
  • Cash-forward payment is standard; ask ahead if you need a card option
  • Someone 21+ (recreational) or the registered cardholder/caregiver (medical) must be present to receive the order
  • Not every licensed dispensary offers medical delivery, so confirm before you order expecting it

Fees, Limits and Taxes

Budget for Montana's possession limits and taxes; delivery fees, where offered, are set individually by each participating dispensary.

Recreational possession limit 1 ounce of flower, 8 grams of concentrate, and edibles containing up to 800 mg THC total
Medical possession limit Set higher than recreational under program rules; varies by cardholder circumstances
Recreational tax 20% state cannabis tax on adult-use sales, plus any applicable local-option tax up to 3% where a county has adopted one
Medical tax 4% state cannabis tax on medical sales
Delivery fee Set by each participating dispensary where medical delivery is offered; no statewide standard fee
Curbside/pickup fee None. Curbside and in-store pickup do not carry an added charge

Montana Delivery Tips

  • If you are a medical cardholder wanting delivery, call ahead. Only some licensed dispensaries participate, and coverage areas vary
  • Recreational customers should plan on pickup or curbside, not delivery, when budgeting time
  • Pre-order online to speed up your in-store or curbside pickup, especially during busy hours
  • Have your ID (and medical card, if applicable) out and ready before the driver or budtender arrives
  • Bring cash, since most Montana dispensaries cannot process standard debit or credit cards
  • Curbside pickup requires you to be parked immediately outside; you cannot idle in a drive-through lane and expect service
  • Ask your dispensary about loyalty programs, since delivery fees and minimums are set store by store and can vary a lot
  • If you are not a Montana resident, you can still buy recreational cannabis with a valid ID, but medical delivery is limited to registered Montana cardholders
