Iowa calls its program medical cannabidiol, and the name is a fair warning. This is not a dispensary state in the way Illinois or Missouri is. Registered patients buy from five licensed dispensaries, cannot have anything delivered, and work against a rolling 90-day THC ceiling that most patients in other states would use in a fortnight. It is still a real program with real products, and for the right conditions it works.

Chronic pain was added later than the original list and is now the most commonly used pathway. Because the 90-day THC ceiling is so low, discuss product form with your practitioner. A patient using tinctures at low doses gets far more out of 4.5 grams than one buying high-THC vape cartridges.
Finding a Certifying Practitioner
Iowa allows a wide set of health care practitioners to certify, and permits telemedicine, which matters in a state with five dispensaries and a lot of rural distance.

The Application Process
Iowa runs an online registration through the Department of Health and Human Services, following a practitioner certification.

You need an Iowa driver license or state ID and a condition on the program list. Iowa does not register out-of-state patients.

Renewal

Timeline: Start 45 days out. If you are using the waiver route, allow longer, because the practitioner has to document the justification again with the renewal certification.
