Tuscaloosa sits on the Black Warrior River and is built around the University of Alabama, which shapes much of the city's population and drives demand from both staff and students who qualify medically. The Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in nearby Vance adds another large employer base to the county. No AMCC license has been awarded to any Tuscaloosa County address so far. The closest approved sites are Bessemer and Birmingham, both part of the Birmingham metro roughly 55 miles northeast via I-20/59 (about 1 hour), where a Callie's Apothecary (Bessemer) and a BamaBloom (Birmingham) were both targeting September 2026 openings.
Tuscaloosa County residents wanting a legal purchase have exactly one route today: that 55-mile trip northeast, since no closer counter is licensed.
Both the Bessemer and Birmingham storefronts sit along established retail corridors rather than in stand-alone medical plazas, putting them near other errands rather than tucked away somewhere isolated. The opening-week routine at other new Alabama counters has been unremarkable: hand over the card and a matching photo ID, wait out whatever line has formed, and keep bills ready since plastic isn't universally accepted yet - nothing suggests Bessemer or Birmingham will run any differently. DCH Regional Medical Center, the county's dominant hospital system, sits alongside the university as a source of physician certifications for Tuscaloosa patients.

Alabama's medical cannabis program is real but still very young. The Darren Wesley 'Ato' Hall Compassion Act passed in 2021 and created the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC), but license awards were tied up in litigation for years afterward. That changed on December 11, 2025, when the AMCC voted to approve dispensary licenses, and on January 8, 2026, three companies were issued licenses: CCS of Alabama, GP6 Wellness, and RJK Holdings AL. A fourth award, to Yellowhammer, was stayed pending an administrative challenge.
Callie's Apothecary, operated by CCS of Alabama, opened in Montgomery on June 4, 2026 as the state's first legally operating dispensary. A second Callie's opened at 309 Battle Street West in Talladega on August 28, 2026, and a third, in Bessemer near Birmingham, was expected in September 2026. GP6 Wellness has been building out BamaBloom dispensaries in Athens and Birmingham, also targeted for September 2026, with a third GP6 site approved for Attalla in Etowah County, and RJK Holdings AL has approved sites planned for Oxford, Mobile, and Daphne. That is the whole approved map: nine cities across three licensees. CCS moved its third site from Cullman to Bessemer before opening, so Cullman is not an approved location.
Recreational cannabis is illegal statewide - a misdemeanor on a first personal-use offense, with felony exposure for repeat or larger-quantity possession. Only registered patients with a valid Alabama medical cannabis card may purchase, and only in person; the program does not allow delivery.
Separately, hemp-derived THC products (HB 445, fully effective January 2026) are regulated by the ABC Board - sold only in licensed stores to buyers 21+, capped at 10 mg THC per serving and 40 mg per package, no delivery. Smokable hemp is banned outright: since July 1, 2025, selling or simply possessing hemp flower, pre-rolls or hemp cigars is a Class C felony carrying up to ten years, and prosecutors have applied the same reading to THC vapes. Retail sales also carry a 10 percent excise tax. This is a separate system from the AMCC medical program.

Alabama's licensed retail market only began operating in June 2026, so available brands are limited and will keep changing. The three companies holding dispensary licenses are CCS of Alabama (Callie's Apothecary), GP6 Wellness (BamaBloom), and RJK Holdings AL. A fourth award, to Yellowhammer, remains stayed pending an administrative challenge. Ask dispensary staff which licensed processor supplied a given product and request the batch's independent lab results before buying - required on every approved product.

Alabama's rollout has moved from zero open stores to two in three months: Montgomery in June 2026 and Talladega in August, with Bessemer, Birmingham and Athens targeted for September. The Gulf Coast is further out - RJK Holdings AL's Mobile and Daphne addresses were still empty units with no announced dates, as were Oxford and Attalla. Integrated cultivation-to-retail licenses sat in contested-case hearings that opened in July 2026, and the Yellowhammer license stayed stayed pending appeal. The approved map is capped at nine cities unless that fourth license clears, which would add Demopolis, Owens Cross Roads and a second Birmingham store. Southeast Alabama and the Shoals have no path to a nearby counter under the current list.
