It was created by breeders Joesy Whales and Lone Watie of GG Strains, from a three-way cross of Chem’s Sister, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel. The commonly repeated origin story is that the plant came out of an accidental pollination rather than a planned breeding programme — the “glue” name refers to how thoroughly its resin gums up trimming scissors.

It is listed at roughly 63% indica and 37% sativa, which understates how heavy it actually reads at typical potency.

The Name Change, Explained

In 2017 the Ohio-based Gorilla Glue Company — the adhesive manufacturer — sued GG Strains for trademark infringement, arguing the strain names damaged a brand it had built over roughly two decades. The case ran about six months and settled.

The settlement involved no monetary penalty, but GG Strains agreed to drop the word “gorilla” and all associated imagery. Licensees had 90 days from 19 September to comply. The renames:

• Gorilla Glue #4 → GG4, also sold as Original Glue
• Gorilla Glue #5 → GG5, also sold as New Glue
• Gorilla Glue #1 → GG1, also sold as Sister Glue

The rebranding reportedly cost GG Strains over $250,000. The practical consequence for shoppers in 2026: a licensed dispensary will list this as GG4 or Original Glue, not as Gorilla Glue. Same genetics, different label. If a store is still using the old name on packaging, that is a compliance question, not a quality signal.

The resin production is the other headline. Limonene adds a citrus lift that cuts the diesel. Myrcene supplies the musky, herbal weight underneath. Humulene rounds it out with a dry woody note.

Reports typically describe a fast, forceful onset — this is not a creeper — followed by a body effect substantial enough that GG4 is one of the cultivars most frequently associated with not leaving the sofa.

Given the potency, the standard THC-dominant side effects arrive more readily than with a moderate strain: dry mouth, dry eyes, and increased anxiety risk at high doses in sensitive users are all commonly reported. Grower reports consistently emphasize resin: swollen calyxes, heavy trichome coverage, and the sticky handling that gave the plant its name. It is grown indoors and outdoors and is a common choice where the end product is destined for extraction.

Flowering-week and yield figures vary between seed sources and between the GG4 cut and its GG1 and GG5 siblings, and we are not stating one as settled. Use the figures from the specific seed bank or clone source you are buying from, and confirm which of the numbered Glue cuts it actually is.

How It Compares

Against Skywalker OG, GG4 is comparably heavy but chocolate-and-diesel where Skywalker is pine-and-berry. Against Granddaddy Purple, it is markedly higher in THC and faster in onset; GDP is the gentler arrival. Against Sour Diesel, it shares the fuel character but goes down rather than up. Against Northern Lights, it is far stronger — Northern Lights is the moderate classic and the better first indica.

If GG4 has been too much, Northern Lights or a lower-THC GDP batch is the usual step down.
